The vision of the “Sustainable PJ 2030” Strategic Plan is to realise the PJ City as a sustainable and liveable city with smart governance, good image, harmonious and peaceful environment. To achieve the above vision, this strategic plan has outlined five main directions. One of the directions to mention here is to create an inclusive and barrier-free environment.
Thus, MBPJ has prepared the Petaling Jaya Universal Design Master Plan to support the above direction. There are four main strategies being highlighted under this plan, namely :
- to establish the Universal Design & accessibility technical committee. (or UD Team)
- to audit the existing buildings/ infrastructures’ accessibilities and programs.
- to launch the Area-based Projects.
- to conduct the public awareness programs and technical training.
Besides, on the 3rd and 4th June 2015, the seminar & workshop of “Universal Design And Accessibility In The Built Environment Towards People Centred Petaling Jaya” has also suggested to organise an award ceremony as one of the public awareness programs
Starting from year 2016, MBPJ has been organising the Universal Design (UD) Award. This event has become an annual event, which aims for giving a token of appreciation to those buildings in PJ city that have provided UD facilities viz. upgrade existing building for more user-friendly to those disable people, elderly, children and other vulnerable groups through the application of UD elements.
In addition, this UD Award also serves as a platform to increase the UD awareness among real estate developers, consultants such as urban planners, architects, engineers, landscape architects, interior designer and contractors who directly involved in the construction sector. It is our hope that through this award, these stakeholders will be more sensitive and take into account on the UD aspects in the whole development, namely from the earlier planning stage to the implementation stage in the development site.
